yo nice post. i agree especially with your middle paragraph about how college is the place where they need to be challenged, not protected. Also, Twitter hit college football and NFL by storm simultaneously. You see a lot of veteran players misuse it or get in trouble with it because they've never had experience. it's not like Twitter goes away in the NFL too; college players need to learn how to properly filter what they want the rest of the world to read. If anything, it's a good exercise in learning how to express themselves publicly.

Amen to the pass interference penalty! I hate it when its ball to the endzone & get called for interference and ball gets placed at 1yd. Line with 1st down. Might as well just give the team a TD! Plus its jacked up offensive pass interference is 15 yds. But defensive pass interference could be a 50yd penalty. Should be 15yd penelty unless its like a 5yd. Pass then it should just be a spot foul and place ball there.

I find the subject fascinating - I remember reading a while back that when Danny Ainge first came to the Celtics he employed a guy called "The Brain Doctor" (quick google search break provided his name: Jon Niednagel) who would brain-type athletes and evaluate their potential NBA success. Makes a whole lot of sense to me. Professional teams invest so much in players, but never know about the internal factors that up until now no one attempted to measure. If these new age techniques can give a bit of insight into discovering how high a players ceiling may be it would sure be worth the money!

Really enjoyed the read Kyle.

P.S. Can Sports Aptitude explain why my 2 year old refuses to listen to me? I'd pay big money for that insight.

The biggest reason I asked the question is that I don't have cable anymore and it would really take some effort to get out of the house to watch the game. If I still had cable it would not have been much of a issue.

Nothing to really disagree with in your assessment of his career. Arguments can be made regarding quality of surrounding talent in previous eras, of course, but stats are what they are. Dominance is admired, and that's what Wilt, Russell, and Kareem did.

I just want to note the humor I found in you remembering Shaq fondly for his time with L.A., when that's the point of his career that hurt me most. It's all perspective, and yours as a Lakers fan supports those feelings. But I was a Magic fan, by way of Penny, as a kid. Shaq's best work as a pro went unappreciated over here -- out of pure resentment.

Simmons wrote a nice piece about Tiger's front 9 of the Masters in the final round similar to your closing sentiments. Too much is made out of athletes and their job to "inspire" or act like role models, instead of "only entertaining". As a society, we can find plenty of examples of good character outside of professional sports.

"Work" doesn't always have to be romantic, especially on bad days, even if you love what you do. Professional athletes playing their respective sport, on some level, is simply "work" and they are allowed to human before, during and after a hard day.
